Mark's Journey

A Love Affair with Music

Mark's love affair with music started in the womb, as his mother and 2 older sisters loved to sing. (His dad could only sing "Happy Birthday" and "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech.") Mark grew up hearing great music and harmonies in his faith community. As he was driven around in his mother's yellow Nova, he listened to 60s and 70s pop and rock on the AM radio. Mark played the trumpet and guitar through high school and sang in the UNC Men's Glee Club. After marrying, Mark and his wife Jeannette sang to their 3 children and now they are singing for their 3 granddaughters. Mark currently sings a cappella harmonies with a barbershop quartet.

But 12 years ago, Mark began working with Mountain Valley Hospice, and it was there that Mark began to blend his love for music and a love for seniors. Mark saw that his music added a unique component to his presence and conversations with hospice patients and their families, unlocking dormant emotions, and reinvigorating joy. So many times Mark has heard, "That really made my day." And that is what started MusiCare with Mark. Why should someone have to be near the end of life in order to benefit from this unique gift of music and kind conversation?! Now it is available to anyone, and that brings Mark joy!

Healing Through Harmony
Benefits of MusiCare with Mark

Memory Recall

Research shows that music activates neural pathways, helping seniors reconnect with long-forgotten memories and emotions. Many people with dementia are able to sing lyrics to songs even when they struggle with other recall and communication.

Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellness

Live music provides a calming environment that reduces anxiety and promotes a sense of peace and joy.

Connection & Conversation

Music brings isolated  and lonely people out of themselves, helping them to be more open to interaction with others.
